3 Ultra Inspiring Gym Setups To Help You Build Your Own Home Gym

When you are looking to build your own home gym its always useful to get ideas from others or take a look at how others build theirs for inspiration on. This might give you ideas on equipment to buy, the layout and design of your own gym. Here we feature three different but very inspiring home gym setups that will hopefully help you get ideas for creating your own personal home gym space.

Shipping Containers Home Gym Conversion

Look at this awesome container conversion home gym!

This couple dedicated a part of their backyard to create a space to work out when gyms were closed during lockdown. With this container conversion home gym, the couple went for a clean, modern and simple look. They have maximised workout options without compromising on space in these two shipping containers.

The large windows on three sides bring good lighting to this space making it a really nice environment to exercise in. The Ironman wall art is also a fantastic way to stay motivated while you work out. For more ideas on creating an inspiring atmosphere in your home gym, read our article on creating a resort-style gym here.

Equipment Highlight: Instead of buying a spin bike or home trainer, this couple chose to simply buy a bike trainer stand for their road bike. This is a great option to literally get good mileage out of your bike if you already have one – I absolutely love the multi-purpose use that a bike trainer stand allows you to have as it allows you to integrate your road bike into your home gym workout routine!

If you already have a bicycle and want to maximise its use, bike trainer stands are a great option for you to consider. No matter the weather, it allows you to safely cycle day or night. This makes it a great item to build your own home gym.

Backyard Shed Gym

This budget-friendly yet solid backyard shed gym conversion is a great example for what you can build in your backyard without putting you out of pocket too much.

This space doesn’t take up too much room in your backyard but it offers enough room for all your gym workout essentials like a squat rack and cardio equipment.

A feature of this backyard shed gym certainly is the air bike. Although not often seen in home gyms (spin bikes or exercise bikes are more popular options), air bikes allow you to work up a good sweat quickly. They are also a great way to burn calories fast if that’s your training goal.

If you decide to convert a backyard shed into a gym, you can plant some shrubs or place some large pot plants outside a shed like this to make it blend in to your yard and you’ll hardly notice it is there.

Equipment Highlight:

A great piece of equipment to build your own home gym for a small space gym like this one are the adjustable dumbbells. With these you can do a variety of weight lifting exercises and you can increase or decrease the weight to suit your strength and muscle group that your targeting.

Outdoor Gym Space

What a cool playground-like outdoor gym this one is! The gym in this video is a bit different to the ones featured above as it’s an complete outdoor gym. To build your own home gym like this one probably wouldn’t be on the lower end of the budget scale and most likely doesn’t represent your typical ‘home gym’. But even if you are looking for something more budget-friendly or are not building an outdoor gym, you can still take lots of inspiration from here.

For example, a ballet bar for stretching can be installed in any kind of environment, so can hash marks and HIIT clocks. Also, this family really had the idea of creating a fun workout space for the whole family in mind. This is a consideration to make too – do you have kids who you want to share workouts with? In this case, including equipment like the balance bar or slam wall are great because they can be enjoyed by adults and kids alike and are great additions to a family-friendly home gym.

Equipment Highlight: This outside home gym is full of awesome equipment which can be used in many creative ways. Despite that, we chose the medicine ball as our equipment highlight for this video simply because you don’t often see them used as much in home gyms. Despite that, they can be used for a variety of exercises that target many different muscle groups. You can also use them to work out together with a friend.
